Migrante Alberta welcomes the long-overdue commencement of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, following a four-month delay deliberately orchestrated by pro-Duterte senators to shield her from accountability—despite the constitutional mandate to act forthwith.
The charges leveled against Vice President Duterte—including the misuse of confidential funds, bribery, extrajudicial killings, and other grave abuses of power—are deeply serious. They reflect the same systemic corruption, violence and impunity that have long driven Filipinos like us to seek work and refuge abroad. We are migrants not by choice, but because of a political system that consistently puts power and privilege above people’s rights and welfare.
As overseas Filipino workers contributing significantly to the Philippine economy through our labor and remittances, we view this impeachment trial as more than a legal proceeding. It is a moment of reckoning—an opportunity to affirm our collective demand for truth, justice, and a government that serves with transparency, accountability and integrity.
While we welcome this development, we are fully aware that accountability will not be handed to us. It must be won through unwavering vigilance and pressure from the people. Time and again, we have seen how political maneuvering, elite interests, and backroom deals can derail even the most legitimate democratic efforts to hold the powerful to account.
We call on fellow Filipinos, both in the Philippines and across the diaspora, to stay vigilant.
END IMPUNITY!
IMPEACH SARA!
MARCOS SINGILIN!
